Four types of climate prevail in France. In the middle latitudes, the continental climate prevails in the interior of the country, with hot summers (average July temperature 18 degrees Celsius in Paris) and harsher winters (average January temperature 2 degrees Celsius in Paris), and precipitation falls on fewer days in a year .

The mountain climate prevails at high elevations, where the temperature affects mainly at altitude, and in winter it is sharply cold and long. Precipitation increases with increasing height and occurs as snow in winter; in many villages in high valleys, snow falls for more than 50 days each year. In Briancon, in the Alps, the average temperature is -2 degrees Celsius in January, and 17 degrees Celsius in July; annual rainfall averages 587 mm (23 inches). The Mediterranean climate is located in an area approximately 20 to 60 km (12 to 35 miles) wide along the Mediterranean coast. The zone is characterized by hot, dry summers, mild and humid winters, and a small number of rainy days per year. In Marseille, 550 mm (22 inches) of precipitation falls for 60 days a year, and the sun shines more than 3,000 hours a year.
